Susan graduated with a B.S. in Biological Sciences from Stanford University and with an MSc in the Immunology of Infectious Diseases from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. She completed her MD and PhD at Washington University in St. Louis where she worked in Dr. Herbert (Skip) Virgin’s lab studying the effect of interferon gamma in regulating herpesvirus replication, the effect of chronic viral infection on host gene transcription, and the role of antisense RNAs in herpesvirus replication. She completed pediatrics residency at Stanford Medical Center/Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital where she also pursued research with Dr. Catherine Blish. She completed her pediatric rheumatology fellowship at UW/Seattle Children’s Hospital in 2021. During her fellowship training, she joined the Hamerman lab where she works on the role of human monocytes in macrophage activation syndrome (MAS). She is interested in understanding the roles of cytokines and innate immune sensors in MAS pathogenesis. Outside of the lab, she cares for children with rheumatic diseases at Seattle Children’s Hospital. She enjoys spending time with her dog, walking and hiking, swimming, baking, and exploring new restaurants.
